Volusia, Flagler court documents to be online

June 26, 2015 posted by Steve Brownstein

Court documents in Volusia and Flagler counties will be a mere mouse click away from anywhere with an Internet connection starting today, and they will no longer cost a buck a page for copies.

Arrest reports and lawsuits are among the documents which will be available online on the clerks’ websites, paperwork that used to require a trip to the courthouse, said Laura Roth, chief deputy clerk at the Volusia Clerk of the Circuit Court Office.

“A big change like this, everybody is a little edgy because we want to make sure it all goes well and we provide good service,” Roth said.

Flagler County records were set to go online at midnight Tuesday, said Flagler County Clerk of the Circuit Court Gail Wadsworth. Roth said Volusia online documents are expected to be available after 8 a.m. Both Flagler and Volusia have been working to put documents online without exposing confidential information, like Social Security numbers.

“I’m glad we are here,” Wadsworth said. “The goal has always been to let people access as much online as they wanted to.”

The long-awaited access comes after the Florida Supreme Court lifted in March 2014 a limited moratorium it had issued in 2004 on online court records to protect confidential information. Attorneys have had access to court records on their cases via their computers due to an exemption carved out by the Supreme Court.

The launch today of online access starts the clock ticking on a 90-day pilot in each county. If the Florida Courts Technology Commission approves the pilots, then it will grant the respective clerks’ offices approval for permanent online access.
