Why Eircode (Postal Code) Matters for Dublin Ireland Background Checks

February 26, 2026 posted by Steve Brownstein

Why "Dublin, Ireland" isn't enough for Legal Jurisdiction ????????⚖️

For my U.S.-based colleagues: Imagine trying to file a lawsuit in "New York City" without knowing if it belongs in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or the Bronx. You can’t—the "Borough" or "County" determines the court.

Dublin works the same way, but instead of Counties, we use Eircodes (Postcodes).

A common mistake international clients make is assuming "Dublin" is one big jurisdictional bucket. It isn't. The Dublin Metropolitan District is fragmented into specific zones based on those 3-digit postal codes (D13, D15, D24, etc.).

Why the "Zip Code" (Eircode) is the "Source of Truth" in Ireland:
  • Venue Matters: An arrest in D13 (North Dublin) might go to a different courthouse than one in D24 (South Dublin).

  • Filing Rejections: If you file in the central Dublin court for a matter that belongs in a suburban venue like Swords or Tallaght, the court can—and will—reject the filing for "Lack of Jurisdiction."

  • Process Service: Just like a Process Server in the States needs the right County, we need the right Postal District to ensure legal documents are served within the correct boundary.

The Takeaway: In Ireland, the Eircode isn't just for mail—it’s a jurisdictional requirement. If you’re handling Irish litigation or due diligence, don't just ask for the city. Ask for the Eircode.
