Ukraine's First Instance Courts - What Are They?
April 25, 2025 posted by Steve Brownstein
The local courts are the courts of first instance in Ukraine for both civil and criminal cases. These courts are also referred to as:
-
District Courts (Районні суди): These are often established within a specific district of a city or a rural district.
-
City Courts (Міські суди): These operate within the boundaries of a city.
-
Inter-district Courts (Міжрайонні суди): These can cover multiple smaller districts.
-
District Courts in Cities (Районні у містах суди): These are district-level courts specifically within larger cities.
-
City and District Courts (Міськрайонні суди): These can cover both a city and its surrounding district.
These local courts are the foundational level of the judiciary where cases are initially heard, evidence is presented, and judgments or sentences are first rendered in both civil disputes and criminal proceedings.
