Public access to criminal records now easier in North Carolina

March 08, 2016 posted by Steve Brownstein

Public access of criminal records at courthouses across North Carolina is now easier with a modernized search system running in all 100 counties.

The state court system says the public search upgrade began with a statewide rollout in November. Public access terminals are in place in all the counties as of this month.

The upgrade replaces what many people called the "green screen" system, referring to the color of the letters on its computer monitors. The Administrative Office of the Courts says the new system is more intuitive and user-friendly.

Searchers can perform quick criminal background checks or access information on court cases. Users can email what they find for free.

The system contains more than 47 million records. The search upgrade cost $1.2 million to complete.
