No solution yet for background checks on ammo sales

March 03, 2015 posted by Steve Brownstein

Two years after passage of the NY Safe Act, state officials still have no immediate plans to implement a background check on ammunition sales, the superintendent of New York State Police said today.

"Nothing is in place," Joseph D'Amico told lawmakers today in Albany at a budget hearing.

The state has registered all dealers selling ammunition in New York, as required by the Safe Act, D'Amico said.

But creating a point-of-purchase background check system that doesn't cause delays for dealers or buyers have proved challenging.

"We continue to work on this," the superintendent said. But to date, possible solutions are "notional," he added. "If there is one."
