England/Wales - DBS Searches Delayed

February 03, 2026 posted by Steve Brownstein

As of late 2025 and early 2026, Enhanced DBS checks are experiencing delays, with some applications taking over 60–100 days to complete, particularly affecting sectors like education and healthcare.  While most DBS checks are completed quickly, significant backlogs persist within specific local police forces.

Key Causes for Delays (2025–2026 Update)

---Police Force Backlogs (Stage 4): The majority of delays occur at Stage 4, where the application is sent to local police for review. As of late 2025, Hampshire, Kent, Sussex, and Thames Valley police forces are responsible for a large portion of the delays.

---Staffing & Capacity Issues: Local police forces are struggling with high volumes of requests, limited staffing, and high staff turnover.

---Complex Histories: Applicants with multiple addresses in the last 5 years or common names may face longer wait times.

---Errors on Applications: Missing information or incorrect address history can cause the application to be returned or queried.
