Biometric Database of All Adult Americans Hidden in Immigration Reform

May 16, 2013 posted by Steve Brownstein

The immigration reform bill currently being considered by he U.S. Senate calls for the creation of a "photo tool," a U.S. Department of Homeland Security database containing names, ages, Social Security numbers, and photographs of everyone in the country with a driver's license or other state-issued photo identification.

Under the proposed legislation, employers would be required to look up any new hires to verify they match their photo.

The idea is that this initiative will help to curb the employment of undocumented workers.

But critics argue the use of the database will likely eventually move into a broader arena, possibly amounting to proof of self being required at polling places, to rent a house, to buy a gun, to acquire credit, and so on.

Some critics compare it to Big Brother. "It starts to change the relationship between the citizen and state, you do have to get permission to do things," said Chris Calabrese, a congressional lobbyist with the American Civil Liberties Union.

"More fundamentally, it could be the start of keeping a record of all things."
