All About Greenland Courts

April 17, 2025 posted by Steve Brownstein

The Greenlandic court system has a three-tiered hierarchy:

  1. District Courts (Eqqartuussisoqarfik / Kredsret): These are the courts of first instance and handle the majority of cases. There are four district courts in Greenland. The judges in these courts are typically lay judges with special education and knowledge of Greenlandic society.
  2. The Court of Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaanni Eqqartuussivik / Retten i Grønland): This court also acts as a court of first instance for legally complicated cases and supervises and educates the district court judges. The judges in this court are legally trained.
  3. The High Court of Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaanni Eqqartuussisuuneqarfik / Grønlands Landsret): This is the appellate court for rulings from the District Courts and the Court of Greenland. The judges here are also legally trained. The High Court of Greenland is located in Nuuk.
  4. The Supreme Court of Denmark (Eqqartuussiviit Qullersaat / Højesteret): Although located in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Supreme Court of Denmark serves as the final court of appeal for Greenland. However, cases from the High Court of Greenland can only be brought before the Supreme Court with the permission of the Appeals Permission Board in Denmark.
