Hidalgo Co. Makes Court Records Available Online

February 04, 2016 posted by Steve Brownstein

People who want to obtain court records in Hidalgo County can now get them for free.

Previously, people who wanted copies of any court documents had to pay $1 per page. Filings at the district can easily run 10, 20 or even 100 pages.

People can look up criminal and civil cases online. With the exception of juvenile cases, most cases will be posted.

PDFs will be available for download with just a click of button. People can access the documents from home, as well.

District Clerk Laura Hinojosa said it’s a project that been in the making for years. Part of the challenge is protecting some documents that cannot be made public.

"I know this is something that the public wanted,” Hinojosa said. “Through our vendor, through our IT department, we've been working extremely hard to protect the data."

Hinojosa’s office won’t be pulling in the same money it used to. She said her office should be able to handle the difference.

Any certified documents will still cost a dollar per page and will have to be picked up in person.
