Riverside, Calif. Online Records Will Now Cost You $$$Riverside County court records that used to be freely available online are today locked behind a pay wall, and a credit card is the only key. Starting July 1, anybody who wants to search for court records by a person's name must have an online account with a credit card number that can be charged. Criminal cases cost $1, and civil cases cost $7.50 to view. California's public documents law requires free public access to nearly all types of court documents, but does not address access fees for the convenience of viewing them online. Previously, the court's website used to let the user type in a person's name and browse the criminal records of anybody with that name for free. The new pay wall is an attempt to recoup some of the losses the court suffered when the state cut its budget, said Marita Ford, the spokesperson for the court's executive office. Also, the records system is expanding, so maintaining it is getting more expensive, she said. The court sells name searches cheaper in bulk. A single name search costs $1. Two to five searches costs $3.50 and six to ten searches costs $5. Unlimited name searches costs $250 per month. Users can still get records online for free, but they have to enter the case number for a defendant's specific crime and date of birth. The records available include the defendant's charges, hearing dates, clerks' notations and other relevant information. |
