Checks Ineffective In BC, Say Police

Criminal record checks consume too many police resources and don't provide the protection the public wants, says the man in charge of Salmon Arm's police force.

Staff Sgt. Kevin Keane told the city's development and planning services committee recently that last year the department did 1,290 criminal record checks. He said one employee at the front counter deals with them and, on average, every criminal record check requires four separate interactions.

“They're not worth the paper they're written on,” he declared, stating that they record the people who have been caught, not all the people committing crimes or those who are under investigation.

He said he has issues with people using the detachment to do character checks, noting that the police will likely have to ask council to approve an increase in fees.

The checks are currently $25, while volunteer groups get them free.

Carl Bannister, the city's chief administrative officer, said staff will look into the situation with the assistance of the staff sergeant.
