British Man Detained For Concealing Criminal PastA British man who concealed his record of conviction for sex crimes to enter Taiwan was arrested by police and turned over to the National Immigration Agency. Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau, acting on a May 17 tip-off from Interpol, tracked down the man, whose name was not divulged to protect his privacy, in Taipei earlier that day. According to a press release issued by the bureau, the 66-year old from Wales was formerly a primary school teacher in the United Kingdom. He was sentenced in Britain to two years in jail in 1988 for having sex with a 16-year-old boy and sentenced to community service in 2002 for imposing corporal punishment on two 8-year-old children. The man arrived in Taiwan in October 2002 and has lived here ever since, working as an English teacher at cram schools with students aged between 5 and 11, according to the press release. There were no reports of any students at these cram schools, or children living in the man's neighborhood, of having fallen victim to him, according to the police. The man breached the Immigration Act by entering Taiwan without disclosing his criminal record and will be expelled if he is not found to have been otherwise involved in any crimes here, according to the police. |
