Russians Not Afraid Of Polygraph For Pre-Employment Screening

Polls show that more than 50 percent of Russians don't object to lie detection during a job interview and are even interested in the procedure. However, some respondents don't even know what a polygraph is, while others think they have nothing to conceal. Specialists have their own view on the issue.

The human body is interconnected with one's mind. Telling the truth or lies causes certain physiological reactions. When someone is lying intentionally he is stressed - the person's heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate and sweatiness change compared to normal levels  due to adrenaline rush. And these are not all the processes. A lie detector fixes these main reactions and defines how honest one is. 50% of Russians are ready for such a  check, while one third strongly object to it especially during a job interview. They find it additional stress, distrust and violation of privacy. Many who had experienced the procedure said they  felt humiliated. However, it is normal to feel awkward if you are suspected of something, says an expert of psychology Sergery Enikolopov:

"People suspected of something feel that something is wrong and that they may be thought of badly. This is humiliating and makes one feel awkward. Some people also feel irritated during the procedure."

Still, lie detection while job recruiting is a rare practice in Russian companies - only one percent use it. Recruiting people for special services is a different matter - many find it necessary to test future policemen, security workers and doctors. Even a polygraph can be deceived. One needs to believe in what he is saying and control his body. Sergey Enikolopov continues:

"Awkwardness is first of all connected with self-esteem. People tend to think they are better than they really are. Situations casting a doubt on this are certainly stressing…"

Polygraph test may become obligatory for officials. The head of Russia's  Duma Security Committee Vladimir Vasilyev says a bill to this respect may be put for consideration already this year.
