Would You Frequent A Business You Know Uses E-Verify?After the San Juan Capistrano City, Calif. Council decided not to issue identifying stickers to businesses that use E-Verify, a local businessman is picking up the cause. Frank Medina, president of weverify.org, said he was moved by Mayor Lon Uso's proposal for city-issued stickers, as well as by online comments from readers on the earlier story. "I am humbly offering every employer in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., that's enrolled in and uses the E-Verify system and subscribes to our free bimonthly newsletter a free online listing in our directory (for two years) and their choice of a decal or placard for display, free of charge," Medina said via e-mail. Under Uso's proposal, those renewing their business licenses with the city could check a box on the license application promising to screen employees through E-Verify. Currently, 20 San Juan businesses use E-Verify, as does the city government. Businesses would be able to display a sticker on their front window advertising their use of E-Verify. Under Uso's proposal, those that checked the box but didn't follow through could have their licenses revoked. Council members who opposed the idea said stickers could cause a stigma for businesses. |
