Two In Three Teachers Accused Of Abuse Are Cleared But..

Fewer than a third of all allegations of sexual or physical harm made against school staff are ever proven, with hundreds investigated by councils each year found to have been made maliciously.

Yet the accused can find their career blighted as they are often suspended while investigations take place, and must have a record of the claims made against them kept on their employment file for life even if they are cleared of all wrong-doing.

Some must even face a crown court trial on the basis of the word of one child, such as two female teachers who were acquitted recently of having sex with pupils.

The figures have prompted renewed calls for the authorities to do more to protect innocent members of the children's workforce.
