Florida to Raise Court Fees, Providing Governor Signs Bill
Effective July 1, 2008, the filing fees, search fees and copy fees increased for Florida
Circuit, County and Appellate Courts. The fee increase is part of Senate Bill
1790, recently signed by the governor.
In general, fees increased approximately 15% for filing and 33% for record
searches and copies. The fee for a copy increased from $1.50 to $2.00. The fee for a
name search at the county level courts increased from $1.50 per year to $2.00 per
year.
The bill also increased fees for misdemeanors, felonies, and criminal traffic offenses.
And there is a significant increase from $75 to $265 for "removal of tenant
action."
To view a copy of the bill, go to www.flsenate.gov/Welcome/ and type in 1790 under
the Jump to Bill tab on the left.
According to a spokesperson at the Florida State Court Administration, the likelihood
of the bill being signed by the governor is quite high.
DC Increases Fess for Electronic Driving Records
Effective July 1, 2008, the Washington DC Department of Motor vehicles made a
significant change to the fee structure for obtaining electronic driving records.
The fee increased from $7.00 to $13.00 per record. This fee is not mandated by new
legislation, but instead by a "correction." The driving record fees in DC are $7.00
for a three-year record or $10.00 for a ten-year or complete record. The electronic
access fee has been $7.00 per record. However, the DMV has stated it has
"discovered an error in our billing system" because it has been dispensing ten-year
records online for the price of the three-year record. So the DMV will increase the
fee accordingly.

Washington State Increases Lower Court Civil Limits
Effective July 1, 2008, the maximum claim amount that can be heard at the limited
jurisdiction District Court level changed from $50,000 to $75,000. The increase did
not take place at the Superior Court level; the minimum claim amount remains the
same at $50,000. This means that cases can be filed at either court if they involve
over $50,000 but under $75,000.
In addition, the small claims limit at the District Court increased from $4,000 to
$5,000.
To view a copy of the bill, go to www1.leg.wa.gov/legislature and use the Bill
