Teacher Lawsuit Targets Background Check DataThe Attorney General’s office ruled that background check data from the Austin School District should be made public. Several statewide teacher groups are fighting that ruling and have filed a lawsuit to try to stop that release of information. Texas Federation of Teachers President Linda Bridges says there are several problems with releasing the raw data. For one thing she says the data only shows if a teacher was charged with a felony, not if the teacher was acquitted or convicted of that charge or if the charge was dropped. This lawsuit could well be a test case for on what can and can’t be released and how a district handles that data in the first place. Bridges says her problem is not with the law. “We also should remember the purpose of the background check is to find individuals who have been convicted of felonies, child abuse, anything inappropriate with children. We certainly agree with finding that information because we don’t believe those individuals should be working with our children.” |
