Most AZ Employers Not Using e-Verify ProgramAn immigration official says about 81 percent of Arizona businesses aren't using a federal database to check the work eligibility of their employees, as they are required to do by state law. But Jonathan Scharfen, the acting director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, says he's still happy with Arizona's compliance with the e-Verify program. Arizona prohibits its 150,000 employers from knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, and a new state law punishes violators with the suspension or revocation of their business licenses. Scharfen says that only 25,000 of those employers have so far signed up to use e-Verify. But he says most of them are the bigger employers in the state. |
